Fred Gleason - Coach Boys 16U & 18U

Fred's aquatic career started as a 10 year old swimmer and by
age 14 he won the Western Zone Championship in the 200 meter
Breaststroke. He began playing water polo in 1984 for Mount
Carmel HS. His junior year, the team earned runner up in the CIF
Water Polo Championships. Fred was also selected to play in
Australia under coach Randy Burgess (National Junior Team Coach,
Coronado Head Coach) and was part of the 1986 National Junior
Team coached by Richard Corso and Ricardo Azevedo. Fred was
selected to the North County Conference First Team in 1987 as a
senior. Fred's Long Beach City College team went undefeated in 1987 under head coach Monte Nitzkowski (USA Olympic Coach 1972, 1980, 1984) and Ricardo Azevedo earning the California State Junior College Championship. He also became an All American swimmer at Palomar College in 1991after taking six years off from competitive swimming to focus on water polo. Fred took his love of swimming and water polo to share with others and began coaching in his early 20s; coaching all levels of swimming up to Junior Nationals working at several clubs including Blue Fins and North Coast Aquatics for over 15 years. He is still an active player with Solana Beach Water Polo Club, in 2006 playing with Old Mission Bay Chad Aronen and Fred’s team finished 3rd in the Masters Nationals USA Water Polo championships 30’s Divison. Currently, Fred is the Head Coach of Rancho Bernardo HS Boys' and Girls' Water Polo and is an assistant coach for RBHS Swimming. In 2008, Fred coached the Boys' Water Polo team to an 8-0 record for their first Palomar League Title. He is also the Aquatics Director at the Scripps Ranch Swim & Racquet Club. Fred is married to Dr. Brigid Maruszak who is a Lieutenant in the Navy and they have two beautiful children: Gary the turtle and Rondo the husky. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf and regularly competes in local rough water swimming races. |
